Origin of Terrien

Some Terrien came to New France, from La Rochelle in France.

André Terrien

He was born January 24, 1630 at Lafond, La Rochelle, baptized the same day in Sainte-Marguerite, La Rochelle. He is the son of André Terrien and Marie Foucault. On February 2, 1655 he married Magdeleine Desvignes. André arrived at Québec on the ship “Le Taureau” on June 15, 1656. During his stay in New France, he probably would have lived in Trois-Rivières.

André is the first Terrien to come to the country. He has not taken root since he returned to France.

Perrine Terrien

She was born in La Rochelle and baptized at Sainte-Marguerite’s Church on November 1, 1640. She is the daughter of André Terrien and Marguerite Foucault, and is the sister of André, mentioned earlier. She would probably have arrived in the country during the year 1662. Perrine had married in Québec on December 12, 1662 with Jean Allaire, who with his brother Charles Allaire, are the ancestors of the families Allaire and Dallaire.

Jean Terrien

He was born in the parish of Saint-Jacques-de-Dieppe on December 20, 1643. He is the son of Jean Terrien and Marie Élie. He would have come in the country around 1665. He has taken root and he lived in Trois-Rivières where on January 26, 1667 he married Judith Rigaud. The latter being the widow of François Lemaître, she is the daughter of Élisée Rigaud and Marie Dugas. One of their two sons survived and provided the progeny of several Therrien.

Pierre Terrien

He is the ancestor of the majority of the families Thérien and Therrien of America. Lineage and origin are unknown, but he is probably native from the region of La Rochelle where he would be born around 1635. Saying of La Jarne located at 8 km from La Rochelle, he left the port of La Rochelle on the ship “La Fortune” around April 1656 and arrived in Québec most likely in July. Pierre has taken root and would have lived the first years in the country somewhere on the Côte de Beaupré, where he was confirmed on February 2, 1660 and at Québec where he was in 1663. In 1669, we find him at the seigneurial Manor in Château-Richer, where he received a concession of land located in Saint-Jean, Île d’Orléans.

It is at Île d’Orléans, parish Sainte-Famille on 17 may 1670 that he married Gabrielle Mineau, born in Fontenay-le-Comte, Poitou, France around 1656, and daughter of Jean Mineau and Jeanne Caillé. Gabrielle arrived in the country with her mother and perhaps his father, as well as with her sister and two brothers around 1669. Everything indicates that Jeanne with her family moved to the Île d’Orléans. Fourteen children were born of the marriage of Peter and Gabrielle. After their marriage, we find them at Île-aux-Grues where in 1672 and 1674 are born the first two children. Around 1675 they are back in Île d’Orléans and they settled permanently on their land in Saint-Jean where are born the twelve other children. Of their fourteen children, five have died in infancy, and one in adulthood. Eight, including seven boys and a girl were married and have assured the progeny.
