Trois-Rivières was founded by Sieur de Laviolette July 4, 1634, at the convergence of the Saint-Maurice and the St. Lawrence River. This site was used for many years by aboriginal who came to trade furs with Europeans. Trois-Rivières is the second oldest city in Canada.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The ancestor Jean Terrien arrived in the country around 1665. At that time Trois-Rivières was still a small fortified village of about 450 people.

On January 26, 1667 Jean Terrien married Judith Rigault (widow of François Lemaître). Judith already had 8 children.

The couple settled in Trois-Rivières on a piece of land that Judith had inherited from her first husband, today we find on the site the church of Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Allégresses.
Jean Terrien and Judith Rigault had two boys, one survived, Jean (Baptiste) Terrien born in 1669 and died in 1759 at Nicolet.

Jean (the ancestor) was a trapper and a fur trader. He was in his environment in Trois-Rivières, which was still at that time an important center of the fur trade in New France. Jean Terrien died during the winter 1669-1670.
